Why Midland Businesses Get Buried on Google — and How to Fix It

Most Midland business owners think they're invisible on Google because of bad luck or a competitor with a bigger budget. Usually it's neither. It's a handful of fixable things that take an afternoon — not a marketing degree.
I run a marketing agency in Midland, and I look at local businesses' Google presence every week. Here's why you're getting buried, in the order it actually matters — and how to climb back up the map.
Your Google Business Profile is half-finished
When someone searches "plumber near me" or "florist in Midland," Google doesn't show your website first. It shows the map — three businesses in a little box called the Map Pack. That's the most valuable real estate in local search, and you don't pay for it. You earn it with a complete Google Business Profile.
Most profiles I see are missing the basics: the wrong category, no services listed, three photos from 2019, zero recent posts. Google reads all of that as "this business isn't active" and ranks you below the company that filled theirs out.
The fix: Set your primary category to exactly what you are. Add every service. Add fresh photos monthly. Post weekly. Ask for reviews and reply to every one. That alone moves most local businesses up the map.
Your website never says where you are or what you do
Google can't rank you for "Midland" if the word barely appears on your site. A lot of local sites are all vibes and no specifics — pretty photos, a vague tagline, no city, no service list, no clear sense of who you serve.
The fix: Put your city and service area in your homepage headline, your page titles, and your footer. Name your services in the plain words people actually search. "Same-day AC repair in Midland and Odessa" beats "comfort solutions for your home" every time.
You have no reviews — or you're ignoring the ones you have
Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals there is, and they cost nothing. A business with 40 recent reviews and replies will out-rank a business with 6 and silence almost every time.
The fix: Text your happy customers a direct review link the day you finish the job. Reply to all of them — good and bad — within a day or two. A steady drip of two to four a month beats one big blast and then nothing.
Your information doesn't match across the web
If your phone number or business name is slightly different on Facebook, Yelp, your website, and your Google profile, Google gets confused about which one is right — and confused means lower rankings.
The fix: Pick one exact version of your name, service area, and phone number, and make every listing match it character for character.
You set it and forgot it
Local SEO isn't a one-time project. The businesses winning the Map Pack are posting, adding photos, and collecting reviews every single week. It's not hard — it's just consistent. Consistency is exactly what gets skipped when you're busy running the actual business.
None of this requires a big budget. It requires someone doing it, every week, on purpose. If that someone isn't going to be you, that's what we do at Finch Media Co. — we get Midland and Permian Basin businesses found on Google and keep them there. Let's talk.
